About the author

Born in Plymouth in 1852, James Rendel Harris became known as an English biblical scholar, curator of manuscripts, and expert in early Christian texts. He studied and taught at Cambridge, later held academic posts in the United States, and built a reputation for tracking down rare manuscripts and making neglected sources available to modern readers.

Much of his lasting importance comes from his work on Syriac and other early Christian documents. He was closely connected with the circle of scholars who explored Saint Catherine's Monastery at Sinai, and he is remembered as one of the people who helped bring important Syriac materials back to scholarly attention. His career also included work as a textual critic, paleographer, and collector whose travels shaped the study of early Christianity.

Harris was also deeply involved in Quaker life and later served as the first principal and director of studies at Woodbrooke, the Quaker study center in Birmingham. He died in 1941, leaving behind a wide-ranging legacy as a scholar, teacher, traveler, and manuscript seeker.
