by J. R. (John Richardson) Wilkinson
John Richardson Wilkinson (1837–1908) was a Canadian writer and poet remembered chiefly for Canadian Battlefields and Other Poems, published in 1899. The book brings together poems on war, landscape, and national feeling, with a special interest in the people and battles that shaped Canada.
He also served as Lieut.-Col. J. R. Wilkinson, commander of the 21st Essex Battalion of Infantry, later associated with the Essex & Kent Scottish Regiment. That military background helps explain the tone of his writing: earnest, patriotic, and closely tied to remembrance.
Wilkinson’s work offers a window into how Canadians at the turn of the 20th century thought about conflict, sacrifice, and identity. Even when the verse feels formal by modern standards, it still carries a clear sense of conviction and historical pride.
