Born in Wareham, Massachusetts, on December 19, 1813, he studied at Brown University, graduating in 1832, and then continued his education at the University of Berlin. After returning to the United States, he served as a tutor at Brown before building a career as a writer.
He is generally described as an American author especially interested in German history and literature. He also contributed to journals including The Dial, where he wrote an essay on Shelley, linking him with the wider New England literary culture of his time.
Mackie wrote across several genres, including biography, history, and travel. He died in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, on July 27, 1894.
