About the author

Born in Nagpur, India, in 1872, John McEwan Dalziel trained in medicine in Edinburgh and began his career as a medical missionary in South China. He later joined the West African Medical Service and went on to work closely with the landscapes and plant life of West Africa.

Alongside his medical work, he became known as a botanist and plant collector. His writings focused especially on West African flora, and he is associated with important reference works including The Useful Plants of West Tropical Africa and Flora of West Tropical Africa, books valued for their careful practical and scientific detail.

Dalziel died in 1948. His legacy lies in the way he connected observation in the field with clear botanical description, leaving behind work that remained useful to botanists, researchers, and readers interested in African plant life.
