About the author

J. M. (John MacLean) Campbell is known from the 1904 book Notes on the Natural History of the Bell Rock. In its preface and later catalog records, the work is presented as a collection of observations made during his nine-year residence on Bell Rock, where he served as an assistant lightkeeper.

That unusual setting shaped both his subject and his appeal. Writing from one of Scotland’s most famous lighthouses, Campbell recorded the birds, marine life, weather, and daily conditions around the rock in a direct, observant style that blends personal experience with natural history.

Very little biographical information about Campbell was readily confirmed beyond this work and his connection to Bell Rock. Even so, the surviving record suggests a careful observer whose writing preserves a rare, first-hand picture of lighthouse life and the natural world surrounding it.
