About the author

Born on 9 May 1767 at Shenley in Buckinghamshire, John Leonard Knapp became known as an English botanist and naturalist. Early in life he entered the navy, but left because of poor health, and later served in militia regiments before settling more fully into botanical and literary work.

Knapp is especially associated with Journal of a Naturalist, first published anonymously, and with his studies of British grasses, including Gramina Britannica. His work drew on close observation of the English countryside and helped make natural history appealing to general readers as well as specialists.

He spent many years at Alveston in Gloucestershire and died on 29 April 1845. Although not as widely remembered as some of his contemporaries, he remains an engaging figure in early nineteenth-century nature writing, admired for combining scientific interest with a clear affection for the living world.
