About the author

Juan Givanel Mas was a Spanish philologist, literary critic, and noted Cervantes scholar associated with Barcelona. Sources consistently describe him as an erudite figure in Hispanic letters, and he became curator of the Cervantes collection at the Biblioteca Central de Barcelona, a role he held from 1914 until his death.

Reference works in Catalan note that he first explored several fields of study before turning toward sculpture, then returned to university life and trained under leading scholars including Manuel Milà i Fontanals and the cervantista Clemente Cortejón. His work centered on classical Spanish literature, especially Don Quixote, and he took part in organizing the 1905 celebrations marking the novel's third centenary.

He is remembered above all for his long commitment to Cervantes scholarship: editing, criticism, and bibliography rather than popular fiction. Dates vary slightly across sources, but the strongest matches place his life in Barcelona between the late 1867 or 1868 birth year given in reference entries and his death in December 1946.
