by J. (John) Ross
Born in County Down in 1848, Sir John Foster George Ross of Bladensburg built a career that ranged far beyond writing. He served in the British Army, including with the Coldstream Guards, and later held senior public roles in Ireland, including as commissioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Police.
As an author, he is best known for A History of the Coldstream Guards, from 1815 to 1895. The book reflects both his military experience and his strong interest in the history of the regiment, giving readers a careful, richly informed account of army life and service in the Victorian period.
He was also noted as a landscape gardener as well as a public servant. Ross died in 1926, leaving behind a life that connected military service, administration, and historical writing.
