1873–1953
A Dutch writer, publisher, and army officer, he moved easily between military life and the world of books. His work ranged from novels and children's stories to essays on publishing, giving him a distinctive place in early twentieth-century Dutch literary culture.
Born in The Hague on March 25, 1873, Johan Tersteeg became known as J. Tersteeg. He served as a Dutch officer, but he was also deeply involved in literature and publishing, building a career that crossed several worlds at once.
Tersteeg wrote fiction, children's books, and literary work, and he was active as a publisher as well. That combination helps explain the range of his writing: he could be imaginative and accessible, while also taking a practical interest in how books were made and circulated.
He died in The Hague on June 8, 1953. Remembered in Dutch literary reference works as both a man of letters and a publishing professional, he stands out as an author whose life joined service, storytelling, and the business of books.
