About the author

Born in Couvet, Switzerland, on August 23, 1868, Jean Borel became known as an important early advocate of Esperanto. He worked as a journalist, translator, publisher, and publicist, and he used those skills to promote the international language in clear, practical ways.

Borel helped encourage the growth of the Esperanto movement in both Switzerland and Germany. He is especially remembered for supporting the founding of the German Esperanto association and for editing its early journal. He also published and compiled learning materials, correspondence guides, and readers designed to make the language useful in everyday life.

He died in Lugano on January 30, 1946. Today, he is remembered less as a literary celebrity than as a builder of networks, publications, and tools that helped a new language community take shape.
