About the author

Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Jean Borel became an active figure in the early Esperanto movement and later worked mainly in Berlin. He wrote and translated in Esperanto, and his books include practical language guides as well as literary works that helped give readers more to read in the language’s formative years.

Borel was also closely involved with the book world beyond writing alone. He worked as a bookseller, editor, and publisher, which made him an important promoter of Esperanto literature as well as a contributor to it. That mix of creative and practical work gave him a lasting place in the history of the movement.

He is remembered not just for individual titles, but for helping build the infrastructure around Esperanto publishing—creating, circulating, and supporting books for a growing international readership.
