About the author

Born in Hoevelaken in 1809 and later active in Groningen, J. J. A. Goeverneur was a Dutch man of letters: poet, writer, children's author, and translator. Reliable reference sources agree that he is chiefly remembered for his writing for younger readers, though his work also included poetry and literary translations.

During his student years in Groningen, he studied theology and took an energetic part in student life. A University of Groningen library article notes that he helped launch the Groninger Studenten-Almanak and wrote under the pseudonym Jan de Rijmer, a name that stayed associated with his verse.

Goeverneur died in Groningen in 1889. His long bibliography in the Digital Library for Dutch Literature shows how wide his output was, from poems and fables to children's books and translations, which helps explain why he remained a familiar name in Dutch literary history.
