About the author

Jan Jacob Antonie Goeverneur was born in Hoevelaken in 1809 and died in Groningen in 1889. He became known as a Dutch man of letters: a poet, children's author, and translator. Sources consistently describe him as one of the best-known Dutch writers for young readers in the nineteenth century, and several of his verses later became popular songs.

He studied in Groningen and was first intended for the ministry, following his father's path, but literature won out. He published under names including Jan de Rijmer and went on to write a remarkably large body of work in prose and verse, especially for children. He is often remembered for well-loved pieces such as In een groen, groen knollenland, Roodborstje tikt tegen 't raam, and Toen onze Mop een Mopje was.

Goeverneur also translated major foreign works for Dutch readers, including books by Hans Christian Andersen, and he is associated with Mijnheer Prikkebeen, often noted as an early landmark in Dutch comic storytelling. What still stands out in his work is the lightness of tone: he brought fun, rhythm, and imagination to children's writing at a time when it was often more stern and moralizing.
