About the author

Born in Bedford on June 28, 1855, he became an influential English historian whose work focused especially on Britain, Europe, and the Napoleonic era. He is remembered above all for major studies of Napoleon Bonaparte and William Pitt the Younger, along with broader works on European history.

Rose taught and wrote during a period when modern historical scholarship was taking shape, and he later served as Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge. His writing was aimed not just at specialists but at general readers too, which helped make his histories widely read.

He died in Cambridge on March 3, 1942. Today, he remains of interest to readers who enjoy classic narrative history, especially books that bring the politics and personalities of nineteenth-century Europe into clear view.
