About the author

Born in 1855 and educated at St John’s College, Cambridge, he became a British historian whose work focused especially on France, Napoleon, and nineteenth-century Europe. He later taught at Christ’s Hospital and wrote a long list of historical studies that reached a wide general readership.

He is particularly associated with books such as The Life of Napoleon I, Pitt and Napoleon, and The Revolutionary and Napoleonic Era. His writing combined detailed research with a clear narrative style, making large political and military events accessible to non-specialist readers.

Rose died in 1942. He remains of interest as one of the early English historians who devoted sustained attention to Napoleonic Europe and to the personalities that shaped it.
