J. Hamp (John Hamilton) SeCheverell

Little is firmly documented in the sources I found beyond his military service and authorship, but J. Hamp SeCheverell is identified by the Library of Congress as John Hamilton SeCheverell and as the author of Journal History of the Twenty-ninth Ohio Veteran Volunteers, 1861-1865, published in Cleveland in 1883.

That book grew out of his connection to the regiment itself. In the prefatory material available through Project Gutenberg, SeCheverell is described as a former member of Company B, and the history explains that he was asked by fellow veterans to prepare an account of the regiment's service. The result is both a memorial and a soldier's chronicle, following the unit through major Civil War campaigns including Gettysburg, Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas.

Genealogical and memorial records also connect him with service in the Union Army and give his lifespan as 1841–1910. Because reliable biographical detail about his life outside the war and this book is scarce in the sources I could confirm, he is remembered above all as a veteran-historian whose work helped preserve the story of his regiment for later generations.
