About the author
John Hamilton SeCheverell was born on February 6, 1841, in Gustavus, Ohio, and died on June 16, 1910, in Jefferson, Ohio. He worked as a newspaper reporter and served during the Civil War, including with Company B of the Twenty-Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Congressional records also identify him with Company M of the Second Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery.
Writing as J. Hamp SeCheverell, he produced Journal History of the Twenty-Ninth Ohio Veteran Volunteers, 1861–1865, published in Cleveland in 1883. The book was prepared at the request of his fellow veterans for the regiment’s twentieth anniversary and covers its campaigns, battles, service, and wartime experiences.
SeCheverell’s history is valued as both a military record and a firsthand tribute to the soldiers who served. It reflects the perspective of someone closely connected to the regiment and committed to preserving its story.
