About the author

Born in Newport, Wales, in 1861, Joseph Henry Wade was educated at Monmouth School, studied at Cardiff, and later trained in theology at St David’s College, Lampeter. He became an Anglican priest and went on to serve the church while also building a career as a writer.

Wade is best remembered for books that introduced readers to places through history, churches, and scenery. His works include Rambles in Cathedral Cities, Cathedral Cities of England and Wales, Rambles in Cornwall, Rambles in Shakespeare's Country, and county guides such as Glamorganshire and Somerset, the last written with G. W. Wade.

That mix of clergy, scholarship, and travel writing shaped his style: informative, practical, and warmly interested in the character of a place. He died in 1943.
