by J. H. (John Henry) Long
J. H. Long, identified in contemporary records as John Henry Long, was an English-language educator and author. His book Slips of Tongue and Pen was published in Toronto in 1886 and in New York by D. Appleton & Company in 1888; the title page identifies him as M.A., LL.B.
Long’s surviving work focuses on practical language instruction, covering common errors, grammar, composition, synonyms, objectionable expressions, and punctuation. A period directory also lists J. H. Long as principal of the Hamilton School of Languages and Literature in Hamilton, Ontario, suggesting that his writing grew out of a broader career in language education.
