About the author

Educated at University College, Oxford, he went on to build his career there, first as a fellow and tutor and later as Master of the college. Alongside his academic work, he became known as a historian with a gift for making English history accessible to general readers.

His books include works such as A History of England for Public Schools and English History for University Extension Students, which helped bring the subject to students beyond the traditional university classroom. That combination of scholarship, teaching, and public-minded writing made him a familiar name in historical education of his time.

Born in 1832 and dying in 1920, he belonged to a generation that linked Victorian scholarship with wider adult and school education. He is remembered both for his long service to Oxford and for writing history in a way meant to be useful, orderly, and readable.
