Born in London in 1832, James Franck Bright became a British historian and later Master of University College, Oxford. He was educated at Rugby and University College, Oxford, and spent part of his early career teaching at Marlborough College before returning to Oxford for senior academic roles.
Bright is best known for writing history for general readers as well as students. His A History of England was especially well known, and he also wrote studies of major European rulers including Maria Theresa and Joseph II. His books have a straightforward, readable style that suits listeners who enjoy classic narrative history.
Alongside his writing, Bright had a long connection with University College, Oxford, serving as its Master from 1881 to 1906. He died in 1920, remembered as a scholar-administrator whose historical works helped bring the past within reach of a broad audience.
