About the author

Born in Savoy in 1767, Joseph-François Michaud was educated in Bourg-en-Bresse and began his career in the world of books before moving into journalism. During the French Revolution he openly supported the royalist cause, a position that brought him real risk and helped shape the combative tone of his public life.

He later became known above all as a historian and publicist. His most famous work, Histoire des croisades, gave generations of readers a vivid, expansive account of the Crusades and secured his reputation far beyond France. He was also associated with the large reference project Biographie universelle, which reflected his deep involvement in literary and historical scholarship.

Michaud died in 1839 near Paris. He remains an important figure for readers interested in nineteenth-century French historical writing, especially the kind that combines research, strong opinions, and a dramatic sense of the past.
