Born in 1767, Joseph-François Michaud was a French historian, journalist, and political writer. He lived through the upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era, experiences that shaped both his politics and his writing career.
He is most closely associated with Histoire des croisades, the multivolume history that became his best-known work. He later traveled in the eastern Mediterranean to deepen his research, and that blend of historical study and firsthand observation gave his writing a vivid, story-driven quality that appealed to many readers.
Michaud also worked in journalism and public life, not just literary history. He died in 1839, but his books remained widely read afterward, especially by readers interested in the Crusades and in the grand historical narratives favored in 19th-century France.
