About the author

Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on October 16, 1866, Jesse Edward Grinstead grew up largely in Missouri and learned the printing trade while still young. He went on to found and edit newspapers in Indian Territory and Texas, building a career as a publisher and editor before becoming widely known as an author.

Grinstead wore many hats over the years: journalist, poet, publisher, and politician. Reliable sources describe him as a longtime newspaper man who later became a popular writer of Western fiction, producing around 30 novels as well as many short stories and articles. Some of his fiction even reached the screen, including work adapted under the title Tumbling River.

He spent important years in Kerrville, Texas, where his writing and publishing helped shape local literary life. Grinstead died on March 8, 1948, but his stories remain part of the tradition of early 20th-century Western writing, with the firsthand feel of someone who knew the regions and communities he wrote about.
