About the author

Born in 1858, Jan Ernst Heeres was a Dutch historian and professor whose work focused on the history of Dutch exploration, seafaring, and colonial expansion. He taught at the Dutch Colonial Institute in Delft and became especially known for editing and publishing important historical documents connected with the Dutch East Indies and early voyages.

A large part of his reputation rests on making older primary sources more accessible. He worked on travel accounts, official records, and documentary collections that helped later historians study Dutch activity in Asia and the wider world. His scholarship was closely tied to maritime and colonial history, and his name is still associated with source-based research in those fields.

Heeres died in 1932. Although not a household name today, he remains of interest to readers who enjoy classic historical scholarship and firsthand records from the age of exploration.
