About the author

Born in Zuidhorn on May 30, 1858, Jan Ernst Heeres became known in the Netherlands as both a scholar and a public figure. He studied law and went on to build a career that joined archival research, university teaching, and politics.

Heeres is best remembered for his research into the history of the Dutch East Indies and the wider Dutch role in early exploration. He taught at Leiden University and published influential work on old voyage journals and colonial sources, including studies connected with Dutch discovery voyages to Australia and Tasmania. His writing helped make scattered archival materials more accessible to later historians and general readers.

Alongside his academic career, he was active in Dutch politics, serving in the House of Representatives and later helping to found the Democratische Partij. He died in The Hague on February 16, 1932, leaving behind a reputation as a historian who moved comfortably between scholarship, archives, and public life.
