About the author

Born in Scotland in 1866, John Dow Fisher Gilchrist studied at Madras College and then at the universities of Edinburgh, Munich, and Zurich before building his career in South Africa. He became one of the key figures in establishing ichthyology there as a scientific discipline, and he is especially remembered for bringing careful research to the study of marine life and local fisheries.

Gilchrist worked in the Cape Colony and later in South Africa at a time when marine biology was still taking shape as a field. He carried out important investigations of coastal and offshore species, described many fishes, and helped connect scientific discovery with practical questions about fishing and marine resources.

He died in Cape Town in 1926. Although not widely known outside specialist circles today, his legacy remains significant in the history of South African zoology and marine science.
