About the author

Born in Banchory, Scotland, in 1861, James Cuthbert Hadden became known as an organist, journalist, musicologist, and biographer. He spent much of his working life in Edinburgh, where he wrote widely on music for a broad audience.

Hadden produced a large number of books on composers and musical history, including studies of Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Wagner, as well as books on opera and listening. His writing aimed to explain music clearly rather than academically, which helped introduce well-known composers and works to everyday readers.

He died in Edinburgh in 1914. Although he is not as widely remembered today as some of the figures he wrote about, his work remains a useful window into how music was presented to popular readers in his time.
