About the author

John Cuthbert Long was an American author born in 1892. Records for Motor Camping identify him as "John Cuthbert Long, 1892-", and the Smithsonian Institution Archives also list him as "Long, J. C. (John Cuthbert), 1892-."

His writing covered an unusually broad mix of subjects. Early on, he co-wrote Motor Camping with John Dietrich Long and published Public Relations: A Handbook of Publicity. Later, he became especially known for historical and biographical books including Mr. Pitt and America's Birthright, Lord Jeffery Amherst, a Soldier of the King, George III: The Story of a Complex Man, and Roy D. Chapin: The Man Behind the Hudson Motor Car Company.

Long also worked on institutional history. The Smithsonian Institution Archives preserves a collection of his correspondence, research, and photographs connected with James Smithson and the Smithsonian Story, the 1965 book he co-authored with Leonard Carmichael. That surviving archive suggests a careful researcher as well as a prolific storyteller.
