About the author

Born in Adelaide in 1848, he spent part of his youth in Victoria and was educated at Geelong National Grammar School. After early work in pastoral and mining life, he returned to Adelaide in 1868 and joined the South Australian Register, where he became known as a theatre critic.

He later bought into Adelaide Punch and also built a public career in South Australia as a member of parliament for Onkaparinga. From 1887 to 1889 he served as Minister of Education and of the Northern Territory, while continuing to be closely associated with journalism and public debate.

As a writer, he is remembered for books shaped by direct experience, including To Mount Browne and Back, or, Moses and Me and the well-known mining guide Getting Gold (1898). He died in North Adelaide in 1904, leaving behind work that blends practical knowledge, observation, and a strong sense of colonial Australian life.
