About the author

Born on November 25, 1867, Joseph Arthur Gibbs was an English writer and cricketer whose name is most closely linked with A Cotswold Village; or, Country Life and Pursuits in Gloucestershire. The book is remembered for its vivid, affectionate picture of everyday country life in the Cotswolds, and it helped preserve a world of local customs, sport, and seasonal rhythms.

Gibbs also played first-class cricket in the 1890s, appearing for Somerset as well as for MCC and I Zingari. That mix of sporting life and close observation of the countryside gives his writing an easy, personal feel, as though he is sharing the pleasures of a place he knew deeply.

His life was short: he died on May 13, 1899, at the age of 31. Even so, his work has lasted, especially among readers drawn to classic nature writing, rural history, and the atmosphere of the late nineteenth-century English countryside.
