by J. A. (Johan Adam) Wijnne
Born in Hoogeveen on December 4, 1822, Johan Adam Wijnne became a Dutch historian whose work was closely tied to education. Sources agree that he later died in Utrecht on August 1, 1899, and that he built his reputation through historical writing and teaching.
Wijnne is remembered especially for accessible history books, including works on Dutch national history and general history that circulated widely enough to remain in library and public-domain collections today. A biographical notice also describes his youth as difficult and suggests that those early hardships shaped both his personality and his writing style.
He also held a professorship at Utrecht University, where he taught general history and related subjects in the later part of his career. Taken together, the record that survives presents him as a serious scholar who devoted much of his life to making history teachable and readable.
