A 19th-century Dutch historian and teacher, he wrote clear, wide-ranging history books that helped bring the ancient world, world history, and Dutch history to generations of students.

by J. A. (Johan Adam) Wijnne
Born in Hoogeveen on December 4, 1822, Johan Adam Wijnne became a respected Dutch historian whose work was closely tied to education. He is remembered for writing accessible history books, including Geschiedenis der oudheid, Handboek der algemeene geschiedenis, and Geschiedenis van het Vaderland.
Wijnne also taught at Utrecht University, where he served as professor of general history and political geography from 1873, with Dutch national history later added to his chair. His career suggests a scholar who cared not only about research, but also about making history understandable and useful for students.
He died in Utrecht on August 1, 1899. Though not widely known today outside specialist circles, his books show the lasting role of 19th-century historians in shaping how history was taught to the general public.
