About the author

Born in Ogulin, Croatia, on April 18, 1874, she came from the prominent Mažuranić family and grew up in a strongly literary and intellectual environment. Although much of her education was private, she developed into a remarkably versatile writer whose work included poems, stories, novels, fables, essays, and articles.

She is best known for children's literature, especially Croatian Tales of Long Ago and The Brave Adventures of Lapitch. Her writing drew on folklore and Slavic myth while keeping a warm, clear style that made her books appealing to young readers without talking down to them.

Over time, her reputation grew far beyond her home country. She was widely celebrated as one of Croatia's greatest writers for children, and her achievements were recognized by major cultural institutions during her lifetime. She died in Zagreb on September 21, 1938, but her stories still hold an important place in Croatian literature.
