Born on March 17, 1890, Ivan Ray Tannehill was an American meteorologist, writer, and former U.S. Army lieutenant. After his military service, he became a forecaster with the United States Weather Bureau and went on to build a reputation as a prolific author on weather and climate.

Tannehill wrote for both specialists and general readers, and his work helped explain hurricanes and other major weather systems in accessible terms. His writing on hurricanes was widely regarded as an important standard reference from the late 1930s into the early 1950s.

He died on May 2, 1959. For listeners interested in classic science writing, his books offer a snapshot of how weather was interpreted and explained in the first half of the twentieth century.
