About the author

Born in 1870 in what is now the Ternopil region, Yulian Bachynsky became known as a Ukrainian public and political figure, journalist, and diplomat. He studied law at Lviv and Berlin universities, and his name is closely tied to Ukraina Irredenta, the influential 1895 work that made one of the earliest modern political arguments for an independent Ukrainian state.

Bachynsky was active in public life during a turbulent era for Ukraine. During the years of the Ukrainian People's Republic, he served as a diplomat and represented the republic in Washington, where he sought support and recognition from the United States. His political writing and advocacy helped make him an important voice in the history of Ukrainian statehood.

His later fate was tragic. Arrested during the Stalinist period, he died in 1940 in Soviet custody. Today he is remembered not only as an author, but also as an early and influential advocate of Ukrainian independence.
