Born on May 30, 1889, in Kirkliston, Scotland, Isobel Wylie Hutchison grew up at Carlowrie Castle and began writing early. She went on to build an unusual life for her time, becoming a traveler, poet, author, filmmaker, and botanist whose work reached readers far beyond Scotland.

From the 1920s into the 1930s, she traveled extensively in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, including Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands. She often traveled independently and collected plants along the way, while also recording her journeys in books, articles, poetry, and film. Her writing is closely tied to place, combining adventure with attention to landscape, people, and the natural world.

Hutchison died on February 20, 1982. She is now remembered as a distinctive voice in travel writing and as a pioneering woman who crossed boundaries in exploration, literature, and science.
