About the author

Born in Dublin on March 15, 1774, he became known as a topographical writer, explorer, and artist. In the 1790s he traveled widely in the United States and Canada, and those journeys became the basis for Travels through the States of North America, and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, first published in 1799.

That book made his reputation because it gave European readers a detailed look at the young United States and British North America. Alongside his writing, he was also active in Irish intellectual life and was associated with the Royal Dublin Society, where he later served in a leading role.

He continued to write on travel and Irish subjects, combining observation with sketches and topographical interests. He died near Bray, County Wicklow, on August 4, 1856.
