About the author

Born in 1826, Isaac J. Hill is best remembered for A Sketch of the 29th Regiment of Connecticut Colored Troops, published in 1867. Library of Congress records identify him as the author of that regimental history, and modern historical accounts describe it as an important firsthand narrative by a Black Union veteran.

Hill served as a private in Company D of the 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Accounts of his life also describe him as a minister, and later remembrances connect him with Woodbury, New Jersey, where he spent his final years.

He died in 1882, but his work still matters because it preserves the experiences of African American soldiers in their own words. For listeners interested in Civil War history, Black history, and personal testimony, Hill offers a voice that is both rare and immediate.
