About the author

Born in Northborough, Massachusetts, in 1799, he studied at Leicester and Lancaster academies before graduating from Brown University in 1822. He went on to build a prominent legal career in Worcester and became deeply involved in public life there, serving as mayor and as a longtime member of the Massachusetts Senate.

He was also active in education and historical institutions. Sources connected him with Worcester Academy, the Massachusetts Board of Education, and the American Antiquarian Society, reflecting a strong interest in civic improvement and the preservation of local history.

As an author, he is best remembered for Sketches of Fifteen Members of Worcester Fire Society (1874), a concise collection of biographical and historical portraits rooted in Worcester’s past. He died in Worcester in 1883.
