About the author

Born in Woolwich, London, in 1874, Isa Bowman began performing onstage as a child and went on to build a career as an actress. She is most often remembered now for her connection to Lewis Carroll, whom she met after appearing as Alice in an 1888 stage production of Alice in Wonderland.

That friendship later shaped her writing. In 1899 she published The Story of Lewis Carroll, Told for Young People by the Real Alice in Wonderland, a memoir that introduced younger readers to Carroll through affectionate recollections and simple storytelling. The book remains notable as an early personal portrait of a writer whose life has fascinated readers for well over a century.

Bowman lived until 1958, and her unusual place in literary history comes from standing at the meeting point of theater, childhood performance, and the lasting cultural world of Alice. For audiobook listeners, her work offers not just biography, but a rare voice from someone who knew Carroll personally.
