About the author

Born in Amsterdam in 1872, he came from a poor Portuguese-Jewish family and worked a range of jobs before building a literary career. He became known as a novelist, poet, and critic, and his writing often drew on the neighborhoods, labor, and social tensions of the city he knew firsthand.

His best-known work is closely tied to Dutch naturalism: he wrote sweeping, detailed novels about ordinary people, especially workers and the urban poor, and his fiction was often sympathetic to socialist ideals. He also wrote historical fiction and literary criticism, earning a prominent place in Dutch literary life in the early 20th century.

He died in Amsterdam in 1932. Some library records list him as "Is. Querido" and give the dates 1874–1932, but major biographical sources identify him as Israël Querido, born on October 1, 1872.
