Iris Tree

1897–1968

A vivid figure of London bohemia, this English poet and actress moved easily between literature, theater, and the avant-garde art world. Her life was as memorable as her work, shaped by sharp wit, modern style, and a talent for turning heads.

About the author

Born in London on January 27, 1897, Iris Tree grew up in a theatrical family as the daughter of actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and actress Helen Maud Tree. She became known not only as a poet and actress, but also as an artists’ model closely associated with modernist circles.

Tree published several books of poetry, including Poems and The Traveller and Other Poems, and her work appeared in the early Wheels anthologies edited by Edith Sitwell. Alongside her writing, she acted on stage and in films, building a reputation as one of the most distinctive bohemian personalities of her time.

Remembered for her eccentric charm, intelligence, and adventurous public image, she became a recognizable presence in British cultural life in the early twentieth century. She died in London on April 13, 1968.
