About the author

Created as part of the International Labour Organization in 1919, the International Labour Office is the organization’s permanent secretariat. Based in Geneva, it supports the ILO’s day-to-day work under the leadership of the Director-General and the supervision of the Governing Body.

The office helps prepare research, meetings, standards, and programs that shape international labor policy. Through the ILO’s distinctive tripartite structure, its work brings together representatives of governments, employers, and workers to address wages, working conditions, social protection, and fundamental rights at work.

Over time, the office has been part of an institution that became the first specialized agency of the United Nations and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. Rather than being a single author in the usual sense, it represents a long-running collective effort to improve working life across the world.
