About the author

Born in Escalona on May 5, 1282, Don Juan Manuel was a grandson of Ferdinand III and a nephew of Alfonso X. He inherited major lands and titles, including the lordship of Villena, and spent much of his life involved in the shifting politics and conflicts of Castile.

Alongside that public life, he built a lasting literary reputation. He is widely regarded as one of the key prose writers of 14th-century Spain, and his best-known work, The Count Lucanor, gathers short, memorable tales that offer advice on power, conduct, and everyday judgment.

What makes his work endure is its directness. He wrote in Castilian with unusual control and purpose for his time, helping move prose toward a clearer, more deliberate literary style while still telling stories that feel vivid and human.
