About the author

Founded in New York in 1915 by Blanche Knopf and Alfred A. Knopf Sr., Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. grew into one of the best-known literary publishing houses in the United States. From early on, the firm stood out for its interest in publishing writers from Europe, Asia, and Latin America alongside important American voices.

The company developed a reputation for careful book design, high editorial standards, and serious literary ambition. Its Borzoi logo became one of the most recognizable symbols in publishing, and the Knopf name came to signal prestige for generations of readers.

In 1960, Knopf was acquired by Random House, and the imprint continues today as part of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group within Penguin Random House. Even after becoming part of a larger company, the Knopf name has remained closely associated with distinguished fiction, nonfiction, and literary culture.
