About the author

Born in 1904 and died in 1987, Charles Wesley Porter III was an American writer and historian whose published work ranged from modern European political history to the earliest English attempts at settlement in North America.

His best-known books include The Career of Théophile Delcassé, first published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 1936, and later historical works connected with the National Park Service, including Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, North Carolina and Adventurers to a New World: The Roanoke Colony, 1585–87. Together, these works suggest a scholar who could move comfortably between diplomatic biography and public-facing history.

The surviving public record located for him is limited, so many personal details remain hard to confirm. Even so, his publications make clear that he spent decades helping readers explore both international affairs and the early story of English America.
