by Ignotus
Born Hugó Veigelsberg in Pest in 1869, he published under the pen name Ignotus and became known as a Hungarian editor, poet, and writer. He wrote lyric poetry, short fiction, and social commentary, and his work was noted for its strong personal voice.
He is closely associated with Nyugat (“West”), one of the most important Hungarian literary journals of the early 20th century. Through both his own writing and his editorial work, he helped champion newer literary currents and became a major presence in Hungarian letters.
His life also reflected the political upheavals of his time: after the revolutionary period of 1919, he spent years in Vienna before later returning to Budapest, where he died in 1949.
