About the author

Born in Tixtla, Guerrero, in 1834, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano rose from an Indigenous background to become one of Mexico’s most important literary and intellectual figures. He studied in Mexico City and became known not only as a writer, but also as a teacher, journalist, and lawyer.

Altamirano took part in the liberal political life of his time and later served his country in public office and diplomacy. Alongside that work, he promoted education and national literature, encouraging Mexican writers to develop a distinctly local voice.

He is especially remembered for novels such as Clemencia and El Zarco, as well as for essays and journalism that linked literature to civic life. He died in 1893, but he remains a key figure in the story of modern Mexican letters.
