About the author

Born in Rupert, Vermont, on February 23, 1798, he went on to become an American Presbyterian minister and author. He graduated from Union College in 1822 and later served as pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts, before beginning a long ministry at Second Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, New York.

Spencer was known in his own time as a popular preacher, and his reputation lasted through books drawn from his pastoral experience. Among the best known is A Pastor's Sketches, a work shaped by conversations with people wrestling with questions of salvation, conscience, and everyday Christian life.

He died in Brooklyn on November 23, 1854. Today he is remembered less as a distant public figure than as a pastor-writer whose sermons and sketches aimed to speak plainly, personally, and with urgency to ordinary readers.
