About the author

Born in 1798, Ichabod Smith Spencer was an American Presbyterian clergyman educated at Union College and later connected with Princeton Theological Seminary. He served in several pastorates, but he became especially well known through his long ministry at the Second Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn.

Spencer built a reputation as a powerful preacher and pastor with a strong emphasis on revival, conversion, and practical Christian life. He also wrote extensively, and his books and sermons circulated widely in the nineteenth century, extending his influence beyond his own congregation.

He died in 1854, but his name remained closely associated with Brooklyn Presbyterian history and with evangelical preaching in the antebellum United States.
