Born in 1734 and active during the Qing dynasty, Liu Yiming was a Chinese Taoist master, thinker, and writer. He became an 11th-generation master in a northern branch of the Longmen, or Dragon Gate, lineage and is remembered as one of the key figures in Taoist Internal Alchemy, also called Neidan.
He wrote many works that set out his understanding of Taoism and spiritual practice. Modern English-language editions such as Awakening to the Tao and The Taoist I Ching have helped introduce his teachings to new readers, especially through their plain style and focus on inner transformation.
What makes his work last is its balance of depth and accessibility. Rather than treating Taoism as something distant or mysterious, his writing brings it close to everyday life and invites readers to approach self-cultivation with patience, clarity, and sincerity.
