About the author

Born in Epsom, Surrey, around 1857, Isabel Giberne Sieveking was a British writer, historian, and active supporter of women’s suffrage. She was raised in a Catholic family and became known not only for her books but also for her public commitment to political reform.

Her writing covered both history and biography. Among her best-known works are Memoir and Letters of Francis W. Newman, A Turning Point in the Indian Mutiny, and Autumn Impressions of the Gironde. Taken together, they show a writer drawn to historical turning points, vivid personalities, and the moral questions behind public events.

Sieveking died on March 30, 1936. Today she is remembered as one of those writers whose literary work and political convictions clearly belonged together: curious, serious-minded, and willing to take part in the debates of her time.
