About the author

Born in Lisbon in 1836, Inácio Francisco Silveira da Mota studied law at the University of Coimbra and finished his degree in 1856. Although he joined the Lisbon bar, he soon turned away from legal practice and devoted himself more fully to politics, journalism, and writing.

He served as a deputy in the Portuguese parliament and later held government office, including service as Minister of the Kingdom and Minister of Justice. Alongside that public career, he wrote on history and other subjects, showing a strong interest in making Portugal’s past accessible to readers.

He is remembered today both as a public figure and as the author of Quadros de historia portugueza. He died in 1907, leaving behind a career that linked civic life, journalism, and historical writing.
