Born in Melbourne in 1885, she became known as I. A. R. Wylie and built a remarkably varied writing career as a novelist, short story writer, poet, and screenwriter. Reliable biographical sources describe her as an Australian-born writer who also lived and worked in Britain and the United States, and her fiction found a large international audience during the first half of the 20th century.
Her books and stories were especially successful with filmmakers: more than 30 screen adaptations are associated with her work across the silent and studio eras. Alongside popular fiction, she was also known for writing that engaged with social issues, and she is often noted as a sympathetic supporter of women’s suffrage.
Wylie died in 1959 in Princeton, New Jersey. Although she is less famous now than some of her contemporaries, she was a major literary and screen presence in her day, remembered for storytelling that was accessible, intelligent, and adaptable across different media.
