An unusually adventurous early 20th-century writer, she turned a life of travel, reinvention, and sharp observation into bestselling fiction, screenplays, and short stories. Her work moved easily between romance, social drama, and stories shaped by the changing roles of women in modern life.

Born in Melbourne in 1885, Ida Alexa Ross Wylie wrote under the name I. A. R. Wylie and built an international career as a novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. She spent parts of her life in Australia, England, and the United States, and that wide view of the world helped give her fiction its range and energy.
Wylie became especially well known in the first half of the 20th century, publishing many novels and stories and seeing several of them adapted for film. Her writing often mixed feeling with social insight, and she was drawn to questions of identity, independence, and the expectations placed on women.
Beyond her literary success, her life itself was strikingly unconventional. She is remembered not only for the popularity of her books in her own time, but also for the way she carved out a bold, self-directed place in literary and public life.
