Hurst & Blackett

A major Victorian-era British publishing house, this firm helped shape popular reading in the 19th century and carried its list well into the 20th. Founded in 1852, it is especially remembered for absorbing Henry Colburn’s business and for its long-running fiction series.

About the author

Hurst and Blackett was a London publishing firm founded in 1852 by Henry Blackett and Daniel William Stow Hurst. Soon after forming their partnership, they took over the business of the well-known publisher Henry Colburn, and some of their earliest books were labeled as his successors.

The company worked from Great Marlborough Street in London and later from Paternoster House, Paternoster Row. Over time it became known for a wide range of popular titles and book series, including inexpensive editions aimed at general readers, which helped it build a strong place in the British book trade.

The firm lasted well beyond its founders' lifetimes and was eventually taken over by Hutchinson, which later became part of Random House. Because Hurst and Blackett is a publishing company rather than a single person, I haven't included a portrait image.
