Born in Kilbirnie, Scotland, on January 7, 1855, he was educated at Glasgow High School, the University of Glasgow, and Balliol College, Oxford. He went on to become Professor of English Literature at St David’s College, Lampeter, where he taught for many years and built a reputation as a dedicated literary scholar.

He is best remembered for works of criticism and literary history, including studies of the English essay, the Victorian age, and Scottish literature. His writing was aimed at helping readers see the shape of literary history clearly, with an emphasis on major authors, movements, and the development of style.
