About the author

Born in Hillsboro, Ohio, in 1873, Hugh Stuart Fullerton III built his career as an American sportswriter during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He worked in baseball journalism for decades and became one of the founders of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

He is especially remembered for his reporting on the 1919 Black Sox scandal, which made him an important figure in baseball history. Fullerton also had a reputation for closely analyzing the game, bringing an unusually observant, methodical style to sports writing.

He died in 1945. Today, he is remembered not just as a reporter of games, but as a writer who helped show that sports journalism could investigate, question, and explain what was happening behind the scenes.
