About the author

Born in Fife in 1823, Hugh Blackburn became a prominent Scottish mathematician and later professor of mathematics at the University of Glasgow, a post he held from 1849 to 1879. He was a lifelong friend of William Thomson, later known as Lord Kelvin, and was married to the illustrator Jemima Blackburn.

Beyond his university work, he wrote books that helped bring mathematical ideas to wider audiences, including works on geometry and practical navigation. That mix of serious scholarship and clear explanation helped make his writing useful to both students and general readers.

Blackburn died in 1909 at Roshven in Inverness-shire. He is remembered not only for his academic career, but also for the approachable way he shared mathematical thinking.
